Are you a man or a woman? That may be the essential reason why you either loved or hated Judd Apatow's Funny People, starring Adam Sandler as a comedian facing a mid-life crisis. Marketing research firm CinemaScore says that men graded the movie B+ but women only granted it C+. As reported by Los Angeles Times, that translates into: "men generally liked it ... most women did not."

Which is puzzling to me, because, as I was watching it (alone again, naturally), it didn't strike me as the kind of movie that might polarize the sexes. Now, I can understand the overall audience being smaller than something like the latest Harry Potter. Our own Eugene Novikov surmised as much in his box office summary, pointing out that attempting to market the film "as a typical Adam Sandler comedy was quixotic, and as another laugh riot from the Apatow factory only marginally less so." Yet, I would have anticipated that men and women who had seen Apatow's earlier directorial efforts, The 40-Year Old-Virgin and Knocked Up -- or any of the films of Adam Sandler -- would have a good idea what to expect, as far as the level of raunch and a view of women as generally cranky and more than a little scary. Did Funny People go too far?

Enlighten us, please. Take our poll of the sexes and let us know: Why did you like Funny People? Why didn't you like Funny People? And did you fight about it on the way home? Feel free to elaborate in the comments section.

If something is bad in an entertaining way, and you enjoy it, then so what? Just because you're enjoying it for reasons other than what the filmmaker intended (e.g., laughing at a movie that was supposed to be scary) doesn't mean you need to feel guilty about it. Now, if you tried to convince people that the movie is good -- not so-bad-it's-good, but actually GOOD -- well, then maybe your friends would question your taste. But hey, don't feel guilty. Let your freak flag fly!

Now then. The handsome devils at Moviefone asked readers what their favorite guilty pleasures are, and what do you know, the readers gave them some. Most of the nominated titles are ones that very few people would defend as being legitimately good, but that apparently lots of people are able to enjoy for other reasons: Battlefield Earth (pictured), Crossroads, Coyote Ugly, etc.

Having recently re-watched Anaconda for research purposes (really!), I agree with its inclusion on the list. It fails utterly at what it was trying to do, but it sure makes me laugh, particularly Jon Voight's campy performance that sounds like Christopher Walken mixed with Zorro.

The readers offer explanations for their choices, too. For example, on Howard the Duck, "Lisa41794" says, "Lea Thompson and alien duck have sex. What's more entertaining than that ... lol." What's more entertaining than that lol indeed, Lisa41794!

Check out the list and photo gallery to see what else made the list. And feel free to tell us what your favorite guilty pleasures are in the comments below.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Eric D. Smell it? Oh yes, it's summer -- and it's finally here (in movie form, that is)! This week on Insert Caption, we're gettin' our feet wet on a little film called Iron Man. You may have heard us talk about it once or twice before -- it's a small, character-driven piece about ... screw it -- it's friggin' IRON MAN! Now check this out: The 10 winning captions (yup, 10!) will fly away with one LG "the V" cell phone (pictured right, click to learn more) and one Iron Man poster. 10 phones. 10 posters. It's gonna be a BIG summer folks, so why not give away some equally-as-big prizes, right?
Yesterday we brought you the trailer for Second Skin, a new documentary premiering at the South by Southwest Film Festival in early March. To continue our pre-coverage of that festival, above you'll find the trailer for Reformat the Planet -- yet another documentary premiering at SXSW that, like Second Skin, deals somewhat in the world of video games. This one, however, is a tad different, as it follows several people who use their old Nintendo systems to create some pretty amazing music. How do they do it? I'm not entirely sure, but I do know that they use the actual music from, say, the Nintendo Game Boy, and transform it into these epic tracks.

It's definitely very cool, and I'm real interested in the film itself, yet I couldn't help but laugh watching these guys absolutely rock out while jamming on the buttons of a Game Boy. It's just comical, I don't know -- I mean these guys get REALLY into it. And their audience -- all sweaty and whatnot -- get REALLY into it. It's pretty awesome, I guess, and it just blows my mind to stumble upon these little worlds of art you never knew existed. Anyway, check out the trailer above and let us know what you think.

In Hancock, Will Smith plays a superhero named Hancock who's fallen on hard times, and when he hires a PR exec (Jason Bateman) to correct his image, Hancock winds up falling for the dude's wife (Charlize Theron). What are we getting here? Well, the first trailer shows us tons of special effects and a lot of comedy mixed together -- all of it to the tune of hip hop. Funny thing is, the film isn't even listed as a comedy -- IMDb has it as a action drama/fantasy -- though they're clearly going for laughs in this first bit of marketing material.

And you know what, those laughs are actually pretty funny. Like the part when Hancock looks at the YouTube clip of himself saving a beached whale. Only, when he throws the whale back out to sea, it lands on a lone sailboat way out in the ocean. "I don't even remember that ," he says. Bateman replies, "Green Peace does." There's a bunch of stuff like that here; apparently they're setting up the fact that Hancock (who looks like a homeless guy) keeps trying to save the day, though he causes a ton of destruction in the process. It's like the anti-superhero movie, and it definitely looks like it belongs in the summer popcorn fluff category. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Directed by Peter Berg, Hancock arrives in theaters on July 2, 2008.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Hilarious Red-Band Trailer for 'Harold and Kumar 2'

Filed under: Comedy, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Moviefone Feedback, Trailers and Clips

"It's gonna be like Euro-Trip, only it's not gonna suck."

Unfortunately, that's the only quote safe enough to post here, because this latest age-restricted trailer for Harold and Kumar 2 sprays profanity at you from all different directions. It's rude, crude, nude and the minute and a half (or so) trailer manages to stereotype practically every single race, religion, you name it. But holy crap is it funny. If you were a fan of Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle (some of you dug it, others not so much), then you're going to absolutely love this sequel. Based on the trailer, it appears the movie begins right after the boys get home from White Castle ... and they're in the bathroom, as you'd expect one to be after eating tons of the WC.

From there they attempt to fly to Amsterdam, only their pot-addiction gets the best of them and the boys wind up in Guantanamo Bay after their bong is mistaken for a bomb. They somehow manage to escape, travel across the country, meet up with a really hot naked chick, stay the night with a hick family (who have a kid with three eyes) and, of course, visit a whore house with Neil Patrick Harris. Does it get any better than that? Seriously. Quality entertainment, if you ask me. The only problem is you have to be over 18 to view the trailer, and those of you out of the country won't be able to see it since you need an American zip code. However, I'm sure it will show up on YouTube soon, so look out for it. The rest of you should head over to the film's official website right now and watch this sucker -- it's a friggin' riot. And kudos to any trailer that throws up the words "Now They're F**ked" in the middle. Harold and Kumar 2 is set to smoke you out on April 25 (which, for all you stoners out there, is as close to 4/20 as you're gonna get).

Permalink | Email this | Comments

New Moviefone Look and Feel

Filed under: Site Announcements, Moviefone Feedback
On July 23, AOL's Moviefone re-launched its site with an updated look and feel, including a wider format for the site and modified navigation.

You'll still be able to access the main pages from the top of Moviefone, but the navigation on each individual page has moved to the left side of the page. However, while content may have shifted, the functionality has not changed: You're still able to access local showtimes, trailers and clips, photos, and more -- just like always.

Over the coming months, even more improvements are coming to Moviefone:

Search will be enhanced to better help you find the movie, celebrity, and showtime information you seek.

Movie and celebrity pages will get an updated design as well as new features and functionality.

Various community features will be integrated throughout the site.
